Things I Bought With My Boots No7 £5 Vouchers & Some Inflation Ranting Along The Way!

Boots in the UK often do the No7 £5 voucher promotion, or special offer. You will receive a £5 voucher for the purchase of any No7 products with any £5 purchase in Boots. The £5 voucher can be used for part-payment of any Boots No7 products. When I first came to the UK, I rarely used these vouchers that I got. But then I realised, hey, I could try out new products and pay less for them. To be honest, Boots No7 products, makeup and skincare, are not on the cheap spectrum in terms of pricing. So you will still have to fork out some (can be quite a lot of) money in the end.

Anyways, currently Boots is running such promotion again, ending 15th July 2012. The previous one ended on 17th June 2012.

But the following haul was made last year. You see these offers come by very often!

Boots No7 Beautiful Brows Pencil in 10 Brown/Black
GBP7.75 (with voucher, I paid GBP2.75)
But this product has since increased in price to GBP8!!!! A rip-off!
This color turned out to be a bit too light for my brows but I use it on days when I am doing minimal makeup look. I have since purchased another one in Black, also with the voucher but I couldn't find the photo of it at the moment. Sorry!

No7 Quick Thinking 4-in-1 Makeup Wipes
GBP7 (with voucher, I paid GBP2)
They had come out with a new packaging since then. But thank God, the price has not changed as in increased. Then, in the UK, it's just a matter of time before taxes go up, prices go up, inflation go up, VAT go up! OK, I digressed.....

No7 Stay Perfect Eye Mousse
GBP9 (with voucher, I paid GBP4)
And if they continue to raise the price further, I'll crunch up future vouchers and throw it back at them! And seriously I have seen quite a lot of these crunched up vouchers lying in the shopping baskets, on the shelves on Boots, etc. Because when I first purchased this in Fudge, it was GBP8.75! Grrrrr!
The olive green one is called Khaki, the blue one Sky, and Pewter.

So these are a few stuffs from No7 that you can spend your vouchers on. I had also purchased makeup brushes, and eyeliners, and sunscreen with them. I'll do another post for those. For now.....
so long.......... Just want to reiterate that inflation in the UK is madness, and prices are rising at such alarming rate that every few months, I see a rise in prices, not only in beauty but also in grocery section!

Nails Of The Day (NOTD): GLISTEN-ing With FURY With Boots 17 Nail Polishes

Sometimes, I am amazed by the products that I can find in the drugstores. I picked up these 2 Boots 17 nail polishes on 2 different occasions, at GBP2.99 each (8ml in each bottle). *pic heavy*

Glisten is the latest shade available on the 17 shelf. Limited edition or not, I am not sure. I got it on a whim, when I caught sight of it and I was like.... Wow! That's a pretty sweet pink, and reflecting slightly golden. Yes, it's a pink-gold duochrome and from a drugstore brand.

Fury was purchased some time back when I wanted to buy a 17 eyeshadow palette from the display which happened to be a GWP with another 17 product.

So the kind manager at my neighborhood Boots store, said that if I were to buy another 17 item, I could get that for free. And I decided to pick up Fury which I think is a limited edition, as I don't see it at the shelf in my local Boots anymore. Also I have read that Fury could be a possible dupe for the coveted Chanel Peridot nail polish. Well, dupe or not, I wouldn't know as I don't own Chanel Peridot which was a LE as well. Even if it(the Chanel one) is still available, I don't think I would splurge on a Chanel nail polish, or just to pay sky-high price for any nail polish which when applied to my nails wouldn't last me longer than, say 3 days.

Which brings us back to Glisten....... Glisten is from the Lasting Fix range which is supposed to be chip resistant and can last up to 5 days. And seriously I wore 2 layers on my nails for 3 days before I noticed any nail tip wear. And it didn't chip till much later.

Thumb, middle and pinky fingers are wearing Glisten and under fluorescent lighting looks golden.

This is a WOW! As I have not used any nail polish that last longer than 2 days before I see any nail tip wear, let alone chipping. The formula is of moderately thick consistency, applies smoothly on my nails without any pooling at the sides, but needs 2 layers to reach some form of opacity. It dries down quite quickly too. Even with 2 layers you can still see the nail line when the nails are held against sunlight. And the color itself? A beautiful shimmery pink with strong golden reflects. It is indeed a duochrome. Under certain lighting it appears as a gold with subtle pink undertones. The brush in this polish is a flat brush which allows easier application by spreading out the color.

Glisten would make a great everyday color, and definitely a suitable work color.

Fury has been mentioned as a dupe for Chanel Peridot. Well, I can't compare as I don't have it. Fury is from the Fast Finish range, which is supposed to dry in 60 seconds. I don't think Fury dries down that fast. It has a slightly thicker consistency than Glisten and applies rather streaky. It is an antique gold kind of color with a subtle blue/green undertone when the light falls on it from different angle. I applied 2 layers in the photos. I noticed some minimal nail tip wear at the end of the next day after I first applied it. The brush in this polish is a round-headed one, as compared to the flat brush in Glisten.

I would have expected this color to be 'loud' and quite in-your-face, but it turns out that it is quite a wearable color for everyday. Perhaps in this NOTD, I alternated it with Glisten and toned down the color a bit.

Nails Of The Day

Glisten and Fury, indoor natural light

Glisten and Fury, outdoor overcast day

So, what are you wearing on your nails at the moment?

Have a nice week ahead!

Photos: From My Birthday & Sephora Birthday Gift Of Fresh Sugar Kisses Mini Lip Duo

And so I turned another year older, wiser(??) exactly a month ago. I think, for me, as I grow older, I tend to have quieter birthday do with family and some friends.

So what was supposed to be a small mango and passionfruit cheesecake turned out to be a more than 3kg birthday cake, courtesy of Hubby! :D And Princess had a great time decorating it! We had some friends over to join in the little celebration with some wine, cheese and cold cuts.

I'll let the photos speak............ :) And I'll show you some photos of the Sephora Beauty Insider birthday gift for this year.

My huge birthday cake
I bet you can guess which were the parts decorated by Princess. ;)

My sunshine - well, this decor came with the cake.

Princess busy writing 'Mummy' on the cake. Concentrating.........

OK, she wrote the word 'Mummy' and the exclamation mark with icing. And the 'X' to the left of the rainbow represented a BIG KISS for Mummy.

Me and Princess

Fresh Sugar Kisses Mini Lip Duo in Sugar and Sugar Rose

Fresh Sugar Kisses Mini Lip Duo in Sugar and Sugar Rose

So these are lip tints with SPF 15. I haven't tried these before and I know these are not cheap, retailing for like over USD20 for the full-sized version of 4.3g (if I am not mistaken). These minis are 2.2g each.

Sugar (left) is colourless on my lips, just giving a hint of shine.
Sugar Rose (right) is a muted pinkish red, that gives the subtlest hint of pink on my lips.
Sorry I don't have any photo of lip swatches.

On the hand swatches, Sugar is on the left, while Sugar Rose is on the right. They are really difficult to photograph. When I have more time, I'll try to do lip swatches, and review.

Because I might be about to go MIA again...............
I guess this is life, things just come up one after another. So I have to tend to them. I will try to sneak 1 or 2 posts in, in between, hopefully.

Look: Stila Petal Shadow Pot With Dark Lips Of MAC Dubonnet & Riveting Rose

This was a look I did back in the colder months, back in December last year actually. I was browsing through the many, many folders of looks I did in the last year, and boy..... I have been so lazy and busy that so many of them have been left untouched. I thought to share this with you as it's quite a simple, rather cool-toned look with some dark lips.

Face Of The Day

Stila Shadow Pot in Petal (a cool tone pink)
MAC Zoom Lash Mascara
I don't remember what I used for the brow.

Benefit Hello Flawless in Champagne
Guerlain Meteorites in Mythic as an all over powder

The Body Shop Roseflower Blush (This blush was part of my Project 10 Pan, and I seriously was starting to hit pan with it, and I gave it away to a friend who was starting to play with makeup to try.)

MAC Amplified Creme Lipstick in Dubonnet

The photo below was taken when I first did the look in the morning, and I didn't quite like the plain-ness of it with the lighter and sheerer MAC Riveting Rose lipstick. Therefore afterwards, I decided to glam it up by applying MAC Dubonnet lipstick.
Just look at the wonders and the power a lipstick can do to a look, even changing a look! :)

Everything is the same as above, except the lipstick is MAC Riveting Rose (Frost finish)

Magazine Freebies: Nails Of The Day - nails inc x InStyle Power Pink, Bluebell & Peach Sorbet

These are actually from last month, freebies with the June issue of InStyle magazines. Sorry for posting it now. I thought the Tesco near me was already out of stock but then, when I went the next day after ranting about missing out on these awesome freebies, I found 3 copies of the magazine and each with a different color of the nails inc nail polish. And of course, I bought all 3 copies.

It was originally GBP3.80 per copy, but upon check-out, I saw on my receipt that I had a saving of 30p on each magazine, so I paid only GBP3.50 per magazine and the nails inc nail polish (10ml) is worth GBP11 each! :D

The 3 colors of the nail polish are in pastel hues of Power Pink (a lilac-y pink), Bluebell (a lavender blue) and Peach Sorbet (a pale milky peach), see photo above, in the same order. So I painted them randomly on my nails and they ended up looking like 'candy nails' as my daughter put it!

The texture of the nail polishes in general is of moderately consistency, not too thick nor too thin. They have a creme glossy finish. But it needs 2 layers to reach minimal opacity. They certainly take longer than 10 minutes to dry down. And on my nails which are frequently exposed to excessive hand-washing and cleaning, etc, they barely last 2 days before chipping occurs.

Yes, they are exclusively to the June issue of InStyle UK magazine, but fret not, as I find these colors are quite dupable. I can't think of any, off-hand, but do check out, say Rimmel nail polishes, or if you are in the UK, Boots 17 nail polishes. You may find something similar.

The Little Paris Kitchen by Rachel Khoo

Of course it's not the kitchen per se, but actually it's a cookbook written by Rachel Khoo on French cooking. And she has her own TV cooking show on BBC1 few months ago. It was only a 6-episode series, but I had watched each and every episode and love it so much and kind of get a bit inspired. Well, not really inspired to cook but more like to eat all the yummy French cuisine that she made. And she cooked in a kitchen so tiny, using a portable gas hob and toaster oven.

So, I was in Tesco the other day and I was whiling my time away refusing to join the long queue at the cashier, so I was browsing the book section and my eyes spotted this cookbook. Not bad at GBP9.86 when the RRP is GBP20!

Anyways, I haven't really started cooking anything from the cookbook. Oh, the cookbook actually consists of all the recipes she made in all the 6 episodes of her cooking show and snippets of her life of how an English girl of Malaysian Chinese-Austrian parentage ended up in Paris working as a chef. She has quite an interesting life, really.

Just a little snippet from me on a lazy Sunday......... Hope you are having a good day!

Review & Swatches: Revlon ColorBurst(TM) Lip Butter in 015 Tutti Frutti

I picked the Revlon ColorBurst(TM) Lip Butter in 015 Tutti Frutti up from Boots when it was on offer last month. The original price is GBP7.99 which I find it's a bit too much for a drugstore brand. And to be honest, I never take a second look at Revlon whenever I am at Boots or Superdrug. Neither when I was in Malaysia. To me, GBP7.99 is a rip-off (like so many things in the UK)! Then one day, I saw that it was down to GBP5.99, still not cheap, but well, having read so much rave on it and the colors are rather appealing, though in my local neighbourhood Boots, there were only a selection of 7 colors, I decided to get one just to try out. On Boots website, there were 14 colors, and 20 in the US Revlon website.

I picked up a 17 Lasting Fix nail polish in Glisten, a new shade, as well. It's a beautiful pink-gold duochrome. NOTD and review soon.

Revlon ColorBurst(TM) Lip Butter in 015 Tutti Frutti

Tutti Frutti is a sweet peachy orange colour which I thought would be great for Summer, though Summer seems to have gone MIA these 2 weeks over here. *Add: And it's quite in line with this Spring/Summer sheer, bright lips trend too.* It is a lip butter, which I used to assume, would come in a small jar/tub. But of course, a tube packaging would be more hygienic, compared to dipping your finger into the product then to apply it on the lips. I read that it's supposed to be a lip gloss with the pigmentation of a lipstick, or something like that.

Well, I have to say that it glides on smoothly on my lips with a soft buttery texture, depositing a (not so) sheer layer of peachy orange color. OK, it's sheer but you can still see the color. It feels quite moisturizing to my lips while I am wearing it and it wears for about 2 to 3 hours on my lips, depending on whether I drink or eat. I think this makes a great everyday lippie.

*Add: But! Yes, but because of its softness and sheerness, it does accentuate any dry flakes on your lips. When I first put it on, my lips were rather dry and flaky, and the photos I took of the lip swatches didn't turn out too well. Just thought of a point to note.*

Swatch of Revlon ColorBurst(TM) Lip Butter in 015 Tutti Frutti

Swatch of Revlon ColorBurst(TM) Lip Butter in 015 Tutti Frutti on my lips

Some words on the packaging.....

It's packaged in a tube where the lid covers almost the entire length of the tube. The lid is of the same color (almost) as the lip butter inside, makes recognition of the product and color easier from a sea mess of other lippies. ;) And on the top of the lid is a transparent plastic where you can see the product inside (see photo above). My little gripe is that because the lid goes all the way to the bottom of the tube, the tiny black part at the bottom of the lippie can be quite hard to grab grip to pull out the lid, especially when you may have oily/slippery fingers.

Now I am eye-ing for the one in Raspberry Pie, a quite pigmented purple-raspberry shade, a bit similar to MAC Rebel lipstick. It's on the Boots website but I haven't seen this color in any of the Boots store, big or small, near me.

Have you tried any of this Lip Butter? What color(s) do you have? Any other color recommendation?
